    Support for the value 5/2 for the spin glass lower critical dimension at zero magnetic field

    We study numerically various properties of the free energy barriers in the Edwards-Anderson model of spin glasses in the low-temperature region both in three and four spatial dimensions. In particular, we investigated the dependence of height of free energy barriers on system size and on the distance between the initial and final states (i.e. the overlap distance). A related quantity is the distribution of large local fluctuations of the overlap in large three-dimensional samples at equilibrium. Our results for both quantities (barriers and large deviations) are in agreement with the prediction obtained in the framework of mean field theory. In addition, our result supports Dlc=2.5D_{lc}=2.5 as the lower critical dimension for the model.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. To appear in PNA

    The cumulative overlap distribution function in realistic spin glasses

    We use a sample-dependent analysis, based on medians and quantiles, to analyze the behavior of the overlap probability distribution of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick and 3D Edwards-Anderson models of Ising spin glasses. We find that this approach is an effective tool to distinguish between RSB-like and droplet-like behavior of the spin-glass phase. Our results are in agreement with a RSB-like behavior for the 3D Edwards-Anderson model.Comment: Version accepted in PRB. 12 pages, 10 figure

    A numerical study of planar arrays of correlated spin islands

    We present our analysis of a system of interacting islands of XY spins on a triangular lattice that has been introduced a few years ago by Eley et al. to account for the phenomenology in experiments on tunable arrays of proximity coupled long superconductor-normal metal-superconductor junctions. The main features of the model are the separation of a local and a global interaction energy scale and the mesoscopic character of the spin islands. Upon lowering the temperature the model undergoes two crossovers corresponding to an increasing phase coherence on a single island and to the onset of global coherence across the array; the latter is a thermodynamical phase transition in the Ising universality class. The dependence of the second transition on the island edge-to-edge spacing is related to the proximity-effect of the coupling constant.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in EPJ

    Promotion of embryonic cortico-cerebral neuronogenesis by miR-124

    Background: Glutamatergic neurons of the murine cerebral cortex are generated within periventricular proliferative layers of the embryonic pallium, directly from apical precursors or indirectly via their basal progenies. Cortical neuronogenesis is the result of different morphogenetic subroutines, including precursor proliferation and death, changes in histogenetic potencies, and post-mitotic neuronal differentiation. Control of these processes is extremely complex, involving numerous polypeptide-encoding genes. Moreover, many so-called 'non-coding genes' are also expressed in the developing cortex. Currently, their implication in corticogenesis is the subject of intensive functional studies. A subset of them encodes microRNAs (miRNAs), a class of small RNAs with complex biogenesis that regulate gene expression at multiple levels and modulate histogenetic progression and are implicated in refinement of positional information. Among the cortical miRNAs, miR-124 has been consistently shown to promote neuronogenesis progression in a variety of experimental contexts. Some aspects of its activity, however, are still controversial, and some have to be clarified. An in depth in vivo characterization of its function in the embryonic mammalian cortex is still missing. Results: By integrating locked nucleic acid (LNA)-oligo in situ hybridization, electroporation of stage-specific reporters and immunofluorescence, we reconstructed the cortico-cerebral miR-124 expression pattern during direct neuronogenesis from apical precursors and indirect neuronogenesis via basal progenitors. The miR-124 expression profile in the developing embryonic cortex includes an abrupt upregulation in apical precursors undergoing direct neuronogenesis as well as a two-step upregulation in basal progenitors during indirect neuronogenesis. Differential post-transcriptional processing seems to contribute to this pattern. Moreover, we investigated the role of miR-124 in embryonic corticogenesis by gain-of-function approaches, both in vitro, by lentivirus-based gene transfer, and in vivo, by in utero electroporation. Following overexpression of miR-124, both direct neuronogenesis and progression of neural precursors from the apical to the basal compartment were stimulated. Conclusion: We show that miR-124 expression is progressively up-regulated in the mouse embryonic neocortex during the apical to basal transition of neural precursor cells and upon their exit from cell cycle, and that miR-124 is involved in the fine regulation of these processes

    Genetic diversity of Lusitano horse in Brazil using pedigree information

    This study aimed to evaluate population parameters and to describe the genetic diversity of the Lusitano breed in Brazil using pedigree data. Two populations were evaluated: total population (TP) containing 18,922 animals, and reference population (RP) composed of a part of TP containing 8,329 animals, representing the last generation. The generation interval (10.1 ± 5.1 years) was in the range for horse populations. Pedigree completeness in RP shows almost 100% filling in the three most recent generations, indicating improvement in the pedigree data and accuracy of the results, and the inbreeding coefficient (4.46%) and average relatedness (5.97%) for RP, indicating control on the part of breeders. The effective population size was 89 (TP) and 90 (RP). The effective number of founders (fe) were 33 and 29, effective number of ancestors (fa) were 30 and 26, and effective number of founder genomes (fg) were 19 and 15 for TP and RP, respectively, indicating a reduction of genetic variability in the last generations. The total number of ancestors that explains 100% of the genetic diversity in the Lusitano breed in Brazil was 427 (TP) and 341 (RP). The reproductive parameters, probabilities of gene origin showing loss of variability in the last generations, and the genetic contributions of ancestors suggest the need to monitor genetic diversity over time in breeding programs to allow control of the next generations and to increase their variability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Comment on "Evidence of Non-Mean-Field-Like Low-Temperature Behavior in the Edwards-Anderson Spin-Glass Model"

    A recent interesting paper [Yucesoy et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 177204 (2012), arXiv:1206:0783] compares the low-temperature phase of the 3D Edwards-Anderson (EA) model to its mean-field counterpart, the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. The authors study the overlap distributions P_J(q) and conclude that the two models behave differently. Here we notice that a similar analysis using state-of-the-art, larger data sets for the EA model (generated with the Janus computer) leads to a very clear interpretation of the results of Yucesoy et al., showing that the EA model behaves as predicted by the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) theory.Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRL. 1 page, 1 figur

    Use of filamentous fungi for improving electricity production and textile dye treatment in a microbial fuel cell

    Urban and industrial wastewaters have received an increased interest towards energy harvesting using microbial fuel cells (MFC). The combined use of microbial anode oxidizing organic substrates and enzymatic cathode reducing oxygen is a promising new approach for the simultaneous treatment of wastewater and generation of electricity. In this context, our study evaluated the performance of a two-chambered MFC operated with three laccase producing strains of filamentous fungi (Ff), immobilized on the cathodic compartment and filled up with simulated textile dye effluent (TDE) and urban wastewater in the anodic compartment. The result indicated a rapid TDE decolourisation (>86 % within 72 h). Electrochemical monitoring of the MFC during TDE decolourisation indicated power density (>35 mW m2, control 3,61) and laccase activity (989.6 U l–1) in the presence of Pleurotus ostreatus on the cathodic compartment. Considering the initial COD value of 464 ± 20 mg.l-1, the organic removal in the anodic compartment after 20 days of MFC operation was 90.2%. Final toxicity measurements in the TDE treated indicated a much lower impact when compared to the original TDE.     Spatio-temporal changes of Munida Rutllanti Zariquiey-Alvarez, 1952 (Decapoda: Galatheidae) in the North-Western Ionian Sea (Central Mediterranean)

    The spatio-temporal pattern of Munida rutllanti distribution in the north-western Ionian Sea has been studied. Data were collected during 14 experimental trawl surveys conducted from 1997 to 2010 as part of the international MEDITS project. The hauls were carried out during day-light hours between depths of 10 and 800 m in the spring season. A progressive increase in the abundance index (N/km2) of M. rutllanti was observed from 2000 to 2008, then a sharp decrease was shown in the last two years. The greatest and lowest abundance indices were observed in the Apulian and central Calabrian sub-areas, respectively. The species was collected between 107 and 795 m in depth, with a significant increase and decrease over time in the maximum and minimum depth of finding, respectively. A highly significant increase over time in the mean carapace length was also observed in the whole study area. The widespread occurrence and increasing abundance of this species in the Ionian Sea could be related to the increase in temperature and the variation in hydrographic conditions which occurred in the Ionian basin during the EMT-BiOS phenomenon
